A Pottsville man wanted on an arrest warrant for negligent homicide is now in custody. Shane Allen Walker, 26, of Pottsville, was arrested by the Pope County Sheriff’s Office early Saturday morning July 17, 2021. After taking Walker into custody, he was transported and placed in the County Detention Center. Pope. Walker was wanted for negligent homicide following a fatal accident on August 7, 2020 on State Highway 105 South just before Sweeden Island Park. The fatal accident claimed the lives of 21-year-old Chelsea N. Mullen and her unborn child. At 12:57 p.m. on August 7, 2020, Pope County dispatchers received a 911 call reporting a motor vehicle overturned accident near 10897 State Highway 105 South in Pottsville. The appellant informed dispatch that there were two occupants in the vehicle, the driver and a passenger, and that they were both injured and trapped. Upon receipt of the report, Pope County 911 operators dispatched Arkansas State Police, Pottsville Police Department, Pope County Sheriff’s Office, County 132 Fire Department de Pope, the Pottsville Fire Department and the Pope County 140 Rescue Service. When law enforcement arrived, officers found a red 2001 Dodge Ram on the north side of the highway that had come to rest on its roof in a ditch. When Pope County EMS 132 and the Pottsville Fire Department arrived at the scene, they contacted the driver and passenger of the truck and the entrapment was confirmed. Additional rescuers arrived at the scene and extrication efforts began to free the trapped occupants. According to a statement from an ASP soldier, as rescue personnel cleared Walker, he appeared to be restless and somewhat combative. While extrication efforts were underway, Arkansas State Police began investigating the crash to determine how it happened. Deputies from the Pope County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Pottsville Police Department attended on-site and managed traffic control in the area as the crash unfolded. As responders continued to work to free the trapped patients, the dispatcher received additional information at the scene and was informed that one occupant had died and the other was seriously injured in the crash. At that time, the Pope County Coroner’s Office was dispatched to respond. After the occupants were released from the vehicle, EMS 132 personnel transported the injured driver to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center for further assessment and to receive treatment for the driver’s injuries. According to a preliminary report completed by Arkansas State Police, when the accident occurred, the red Dodge Ram was driving east on State Highway 105. The driver of the Dodge Ram, identified as Shane Walker, 25, from Pottsville, had just negotiated a curve. to the left when he lost control of the truck. The rear of the truck began to turn counterclockwise and crossed to the left of center into the westbound traffic lane. The vehicle left the north side of the road and entered a ditch. As the truck continued to travel east, it slipped along a slight embankment and the right side of the truck struck a tree. After hitting the tree, the truck rolled onto its roof and came to a stop. Walker was seriously injured in the crash but his passenger, Chelsea N. Mullen, 21 of Pottsville, succumbed to the injuries she sustained. It was later learned that Mullen was pregnant. When the accident occurred, heavy rains were passing through the area and the roadway was wet. Mullen was delivered on the spot by Pope County Coroner Danny White and his body was taken to Lemley’s funeral home in Atkins. According to documents filed with the Pope County Circuit Court on May 6, 2021, following the crash on Highway 105 South, an ASP soldier responded to Saint Mary’s and obtained a sample of Walker’s urine. The sample was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for toxicology testing. After the sample was tested and analyzed, Arkansas State Police received the toxicology test results. According to the Arkansas State Crime Lab’s toxicology lab report dated October 13, 2020, test results showed Walker was positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine, ketamine, and marijuana. After receiving the toxicology report, the file which included the report along with other information uncovered during the Arkansas State Police investigation into the fatal accident, was turned over to the prosecutor’s office. to be examined. On May 6, 2021, 5th Judicial District Attorney Jeff Phillips filed formal charges of negligent homicide, reckless driving and driving while the license is canceled, suspended or revoked against Shane Walker. After the charges were laid in Pope County Circuit Court, an arrest warrant was issued for Walker. On Saturday, July 17, 2021, deputies from the Pope County Sheriff’s Office contacted Walker and he was arrested. At 2:25 a.m., Walker was taken to the Pope County Detention Center on charges of negligent homicide, reckless driving and driving while the license is canceled, suspended or revoked, plus two additional charges of failure to act. appear. Walker appeared at a bail hearing on Monday, July 19, 2021 and was ordered to be held on bail for $ 2,500 in cash only.
