"Archivi&azione: il dibattimento negato sui fatti di piazza Alimonda"
by Giorgio Scaramuzzino and with the actors of Teatro dell'Archivolto, Genoa

Hear then the circumstances which have happened to me, that you may know that I shall not yield to any one contrary to what is becoming, through dread of death; though at the same time by not yielding I shall perish. Hear, therefore; and though perhaps I shall appear to some of you to jest, yet be well assured that I shall tell you all the truth. At that time I alone of the Prytaneans opposed you, that you might not act contrary to the laws, and my suffrage was contrary to yours. When the orators also were ready to point me out and condemn me, and you likewise were exhorting and vociferating to the same end, I thought that I ought rather to encounter danger with law and justice, than adhere to you, not establishing what is just, through fear of bonds or death...
Plato, from The Apology of Socrates

At 17.27 on 20 July 2001 at Piazza Alimonda in Genoa, two shots are fired from a carabinieri Land Rover. The first kills Carlo Giuliani.
Almost two years later, on 5 May 2003, the investigating magistrate decides to shelve the investigation.

No trial has been held concerning the events in Piazza Alimonda and the killing of Carlo Giuliani. The trial that has been denied to courthouses is today performed in theatres as a biting act of political criticism.
Archivi&azione is a theatrical performance of the hearings that have been denied concerning Piazza Alimonda on July 20th 2001 during the G8 summit. It is performed by actors from the Archivolto theatre, directed by Giorgio Scaramuzzino.
The performance has also been appreciated as an indispensable contribution to historical memory and to the irrepressible need for truth.
Its objectivity makes the drama of the performance and the emotional impact on the audience even stronger.
The script has been edited solely from material used in the initial hearings (including eyewitness statements and ballistic and forensic reports), and obviously includes films and photographs. It is therefore a very rigorous reconstruction from a judicial, technical and scientific point of view, without relying on just one source.
However it is its extreme rigour which gives the performance theatrical and emotional pathos. There are six actors in the cast, who play the investigating magistrate, two lawyers from the plaintiffs, an anonymous anarchist whose testimony is used as part of the decision to end investigations, a sound specialist used by the plaintiffs and the carabinieri officer Mario Placanica.
