Preamble

The flight
The result of this useless and reckless charge was that the unit of the carabinieri which carried out the attack and the two jeeps protecting it were forced to escape due to the demonstrators' reaction. At the end of this disorderly flight one of the jeeps appeared to be blocked against a large rubbish bin in piazza Alimonda and was attacked by the demonstrators.
There are a number of videos and photos of this flight.

A) A video broadcast by the TG5 [Canal 5's news service], shot in via Invrea.
[modem 56 Kb - file .asf - 123 Kb - 24 secondi]

B)Another video shot by TG5 operators which shows the end of the carabinieri's flight. It was shot from the steps leading up to the church and one can see quite clearly that one jeep is blocked whilst the other escapes along via Caffa.

[alta qualità - file .mov - 33.40 Mb - 1.17 minuti]

C) A third TG5 video, shot from via Caffa, from behind the jeeps and the carabinieri's backs. One can clearly see the two jeeps escaping in reverse till one turns right, round the church, and heads towards via Caffa again, whilst the other one, where Placanica was one of the passengers, appears to be turning left, towards via Invrea, in an attempt to turn around and follow the first jeep in its flight towards via Caffa. The rubbish bin - as one can clearly see in the video- is on the side street, slightly on the left-hand side, and Placanica's jeep hits it when it attempts to drive along via Caffa more or less at the same time as the other jeep, which is escaping on the right-hand side of the street, which is empty. By observing the video one may also note how Placanica's jeep blocks the unit of carabinieri attempting to escape along via Caffa when it reverses along via Invrea.

[alta qualità - file .mov - 45.54 Mb - 50 secondi]

Even though this is not visible in the video, one can imagine that all this forced the jeep to manoeuvre in a tight space and to turn excessively to the left, so that it crashed against the rubbish bin.

D) A short amateur video where one can see a jeep -probably the one which managed to escape- blocked against a wall.
[modem 56 Kb - file .wmv - 102 Kb - 20 secondi]

E) A fifth amateur video shows the two jeeps arriving in via Caffa and protecting the rear of the unit. At a certain point a carabiniere without a helmet or a gas mask gets out of the jeep which is slightly ahead of the other one and walks towards the other men. One can also see how the two jeeps start moving backwards very slowly, even though it was already obvious that the unit was beginning to retreat. The jeeps even stopped near the steps leading to the church. When the demonstrators succeed in breaking through the front line, the two jeeps suddenly panic and escape in a disorderly and dangerous way.

F) Five photos taken by Devin Asch
In some of them

one can clearly see how the two jeeps get in each other's way and how one forces the other into a corner. A French demonstrator testifies to the fact that the jeeps managed to get in each other's way.
Testimonianza Francese [3.34 minuti - file mp3]

Cavataio, the driver of Placanica's jeep, attempts to justify the fact that he did not try to drive away at once; his statement to the judges says that "...I tried to reverse but my colleagues' Rover was blocking me". This is blatantly false, as one can see from the videos and photos. What is certain is that the other jeep blocked Cavataio's car against the rubbish bin in its flight and that Cavataio seems to be extending his explanation regarding this one incident to the whole series of events as this could help his position in the judiciary inquiry.
What also appears to be the case is that the Defender's engine was already running before the first shot killed Carlo (the vehicle moves slightly and the wheels turn, both of which are virtually impossible if the engine is off).
[alta qualità - file .mov - 2.38 Mb - 03 secondi]

Another important fact is that the jeep which was used in piazza Alimonda when the forensic experts nominated by the judiciary carried out a re-enactment of the events which led to Carlo Giuliani's death did not have any dents on the front bumper and the two headlights were not broken. How could the jeep have hit a rubbish bin and how could it have been blocked by the latter without there being so much as a scratch on the bumper?

Another important element must be underscored before we start analysing what happened around the blocked jeep. From Asch's photos and from the first part of Michelangelo Ricci's video broadcast by RAI [the state television] one may affirm that only a small number of demonstrators attacked Placanica's jeep.

Most of the demonstrators seemed to be chasing the escaping jeep and to be concerned with the carabinieri unit which had just fled along via Caffa, where, indeed, there was a large number of policemen and police vehicles awaiting them. This was an obvious strategy on the part of the demonstrators, as one could have expected there to be a more dangerous reaction on the part of the fleeing unit and the policemen rather than from the isolated jeep blocked in the middle of the road.
An anonymous witness, who posted his/her words on the Indymedia website a few days after Carlo's death, describes the situation near the jeep in the following way: "I was with Carlo and some other brothers in front of the carabinieri's jeep which was apparently blocked by the rubbish bin and some other objects.

There were only a few of us there, perhaps a dozen people, and we were more concerned about the police unit wearing gas masks who were throwing stones at us and pointing their guns at us than with the jeep." Though some shots seem to imply that dozens and dozens of people were surrounding the jeep, what actually appears to have happened was that a handful of demonstrators alternately moved towards and away from the vehicle. At some moments they were nearer ,(link 02/05), whilst at others, as one can see from D'Auria's photo for RaiNetNews,

01

the space nearest the jeep is empty, whilst most of the demonstrators continue to confront the policemen in via Caffa. Specifically, as one can see from this photo,
01

when Carlo bends down to pick up the fire extinguisher the space behind the Defender is basically empty, as almost everyone has fled at the sight of the pistol pointed at them. As one can see, the person with the grey sweater is running away.
