THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN RAMALLAH

The idea of realizing a peoples school of music inside the occupied Palestine finds deep roots into the farest past but it also looks forward a future that we would like to be nearer and clearer. This is a link-bridge between the highest expression of an antique culture, rich and full of the spirituality which can exist only in those places, and the identity of a population which is repressed and isolated by a military occupation lasting for more than fifty years. And this is also a bridge between two cultures, the Palestinian and the Jewish, forced by the war in being far and antagonist.

The Palestinian population is looking powerless to the fast and implacable breaking up of its territory, where a grid of streets which can be used only by the Israeli colons , fencings, 8-meters-high "security" walls and the constant presence of soldiers with tanks, military cars and fixed or temporary check-points do not permit any possibility of moving and consequently of exchange. The soil is taken away from the farmers as far as new colonial settlements - a few containers controlled by the soldiers, becoming in a few time a real village - illegally rise inside the Occupied Territories; other Palestinian territories become yards to build asphalt ways, deleting fields and houses, completely twisting nature and life of people who have their roots just there. Devastation, on every point of view, is reaching abominable levels through the building of the wall, a huge cement snake which is engulfing soil, water sources, villages, and which is charging a terribly high bill of human lives.

It is hard to talk about life quality in these conditions, it is hard to think about the identity safeguard and to the development of cultural activities. But, anyway, great part of Palestinians, also those living in the most violently and strongly occupied territories, wants to believe that their children's life will be better, that the Palestinian population will not loose the feeling of belonging to its territory and culture, that it is still possible to find out an alternative way to reach peace and stability. The desire of normality and integrity is huge and immensely bigger than any other desire of revenge; and also among the ruins of a refugee camp there will always be a man or a woman speaking with regret about the university period, there will always be a poet declaiming a poem dedicated to the reminded or dreamt Palestine, there will always be a lute singer, that the children listen to breathlessly.

The school of music in Ramallah, as we designed it in the proposed project, has to be a space where these desires can be collected and developed in order to touch and revitalize all the faces of a culture which has been worn by a humiliating occupation, where the necessity of living does not leave any space to creativity.
This will be a peoples school, because the tradition culture is for people also when it is expressed through the words of famous poets or through the notes of the most eminent authors of the classic and contemporary Arab music. Students will attend theoretical and practical lessons, taught by Palestinian teachers of the academy of music, composers and instrumentalists, who will placing at disposal their experience at those who want to learn how to play traditional instruments as oud and canoon, as well as piano, guitar and drums.
Students will have the possibility of attending singing lessons, of improving the use of their voice, which is the most important instrument, transporting the words of love, fear, separation, exile and hope to come back.
They will be able to listen to music coming from other parts of the world, crossing the boards and destroying the walls of space and time. They will discover the origins of the Palestinian music tradition, in the largest connotation of this word, a common tradition for the two populations, from Mesopotamia to Spain, where the two cultures can only reciprocally enrich thanks to the differences.

The school will be a space of meeting among similar and different people, to push the reciprocal knowledge and respect, to reply with the dialogue to the prejudices, with the peace culture to the war unculture. To look towards future going on building together, and not destroying, a background of history which was lived and suffered both by Israeli and Palestinian people.
Keeping and maintaining alive through new lymph this tradition means offering a continuity to a development which risks to stop and regress because of the violence of war and of the world's indifference; this means giving value to the link with the former generations, which can strengthen young people tearing them up from the desperation, which is always a bad friend and a horrible advisor; this means using the music as a universal language to give an active reply to those who want to incite the conflicts between cultures and religions.

In a world where the importance of a country is calculated according to its military and economic power and the word "people" is not used anymore, since representation is the last problem of the governments, facing a small school of music towards a powerful and aggressive army could seem to be a utopia. But the sound coming from the heart of Ramallah till the cement wall, a few meters far, has an unexpected power to wear away. Music will slip inside the deep silence of a war which makes also Israel a poor place, where beyond any idea of legality and international rights, the Palestinian population is forced to reply with violence. Music will open a new way, will reply with the power of knowledge and dialogue towards the destructive logic of a war which does not solve any problem but accelerates the development of extremisms from the two sides; music will speak with the language of the humanity who loves the life and dreams the peace.

The project will be realized and managed by the association Kufia onlus, born in Italy in 2002 with the double goal of promoting the Palestinian culture in its different ways of expression, and of supporting in real terms through culture the recognition of the historical rights for the Palestinian population. Among the projects promoted by Kufia, the exhibition "Cento disegnatori per la Palestina" (one hundred drawers for Palestine) where many Palestinian, Israeli and authors from other countries took part; the project "Vino di Cana" (Wine of Canaa), still in force in the antique village of Galilea where, according to the tradition, Jesus performed his first miracle and at the Christian community of Aboud (Ramallah), the development of beekeeping and tobacco growing in Tulkarem, small city in Cisgiordany, closed into the vice of the wall.

Ogg.: Scuola di musica in Palestina

Nel corso della mia ultima visita a Ramallah, Palestina, ho avuto la possibilità di incontrare le persone che si occuperanno della gestione di tutte le attività necessarie per l'avviamento del progetto e di visitare le strutture disponibili per la realizzazione della scuola.
La persona incaricata del coordinamento delle attività e responsabile della gestione dal punto di vista amministrativo e legale è il Sig. Ibrahim Hamid, provveditore agli studi per le scuole del Patriarcato Latino, che sta curando i rapporti con le varie parti e già collabora con la nostra associazione nella promozione e nello sviluppo di altri progetti in Palestina. Grazie alla sua attività di docente, svolta per molti anni prima di diventare preside e poi provveditore, e ai contatti ancora molto attivi con il mondo accademico e intellettuale di Ramallah, il Sig. Hamid ha costituito una piccola rete di persone, che comprende accademici, insegnanti di musica del conservatorio di Ramallah (l'unica scuola di musica a livello nazionale) e collaboratori del ministero della cultura palestinese, che hanno garantito il proprio contributo alla realizzazione del centro e all'avvio delle varie attività.
Con il Sig. Hamid ho visitato le strutture che ospiteranno la scuola, entrambe messe a disposizione dal Patriarcato Latino in una zona molto bella, vicino all'università di Bir Zeit, a circa 15 minuti dal centro di Ramallah. La prima struttura è un appartamento su due piani (circa 100 mq x 2) con ingresso indipendente, situato al piano terra di un edificio di recentissima costruzione, in posizione panoramica sulla sommità di una collina. Il piano superiore dell'appartamento, che doveva ospitare un asilo nido poi non realizzato, è suddiviso in quattro stanze più vano cucina e servizi ed è già utilizzabile. Il piano inferiore, collegato a quello superiore mediante una piccola scala, è invece un unico vano e richiede alcuni lavori di manutenzione. Questa parte corrisponde al piano interrato sul lato dell'edificio dove si trovano il portone e l'ingresso dell'appartamento e al piano terra sull'altro lato, dove è possibile chiudere lo spazio destinato ai parcheggi e usufruire di ulteriori metri quadrati.
La seconda struttura, attualmente a disposizione del parroco di Bir Zeit, Padre Aziz, e non utilizzata, è una sala originariamente destinata a spettacoli teatrali, completamente spoglia a parte un piccolo palco. È adiacente a un'altra sala, che potrebbe essere idonea per proiezioni di film, video e prodotti multimediali, e a una stanza che potrebbe invece essere utilizzata come magazzino per gli strumenti.
Il Sig. Hamid ha preso contatti con un architetto perché faccia uno studio mirato sulle due strutture disponibili e una stima dei costi di ristrutturazione e/o riadattamento dei locali in base alle esigenze specifiche del progetto.
La parrocchia di Bir Zeit non è in grado di concedere le due strutture gratuitamente ma il Patriarcato ci ha assicurato che l'affitto richiesto sarà estremamente contenuto. Per il completamento dei lavori, prevediamo che la data finale non vada oltre il 15 febbraio 2005, il che ci consente di ipotizzare come data per l'apertura ufficiale della scuola il 1° marzo 2005.
Abbiamo proposto la presidenza onoraria della scuola, che verrà intitolata alla musica italiana, al Patriarca di Gerusalemme, Michel Sabbagh, poiché il Patriarcato sta seguendo con grande interesse queste prime fasi del progetto e ha garantito il proprio supporto mediante le forme di collaborazione che riterremo possano essere utili alle nostre iniziative.
L'amministratore del Patriarcato, Padre William Shomali, che si è attivato in prima persona in particolare per il reperimento degli spazi idonei, sarà anche garante per l'apertura e la gestione del conto corrente dedicato al progetto, il cui titolare sarà il Sig. Ibrahim Hamid, in qualità di rappresentante dell'associazione Kufia a Ramallah e responsabile dell'amministrazione del progetto. Sarà cura del sig. Hamid far pervenire ogni tre mesi ai partecipanti italiani al progetto un rendiconto economico, con i movimenti del conto corrente e i relativi giustificativi, e un rapporto sull'andamento delle attività, evidenziando eventuali esigenze di vario tipo che dovessero insorgere (necessità di contattare nuovi insegnanti, mancanza di strumenti musicali, lavori di manutenzione e così via).

Sulla base delle informazioni acquisite, abbiamo riformulato la bozza di budget del progetto. I costi di realizzazione del progetto per il primo anno ammontano a circa 80.000 Euro così suddivisi:

Missioni per avvio progetto 2.000 x 2 viaggi = 4.000 Euro

Totale = 80.200 Euro

Nell'elenco non sono incluse le spese per l'acquisto di strumenti musicali che verranno in parte donati dagli sponsor italiani e in parte acquistati sul posto (gli strumenti tradizionali locali). Prevediamo che il reperimento della strumentazione venga completato entro i primi di febbraio 2005.
