CARLO GIULIANI LIVES IN THE SAHARAWI

The name of Carlo Giuliani now echoes through the desert. If you find yourself crossing the high sand dunes in the western Sahara and you hear happy children calling out the name of that unlucky boy, and you see a plaque which says: "...a young Italian who believed in solidarity between peoples..." you're not experiencing a mirage. Thanks to the solidarity of some elderly volunteers of the Auser association, a school has been named after him. The school will be built in Dakla, in the Saharawi desert, and can accommodate over 600 children from 5-12 years. The inauguration, which will be attended by Giuliano Giuliani, Carlo's father, and a large delegation from Auser, has been scheduled for 27th February, the same day that the international desert marathon passes through.

Luigi De Vittorio, national vice-president of Auser, stresses that "So many children will study at the Carlo Giuliani primary school to become citizens of tomorrow, and to provide hope for those peoples who, for 26 years, have been living in the desert waiting to return to their homeland. We decided to name the school after Carlo to commemorate his political commitment and the idealistic enthusiasm which drove him, and which made him similar to so many other young people in the world".

De Vittorio continues: "The success of this project is down to thousands of volunteers throughout Italy who have collected the €43,000 needed to build this primary school. However, our commitment is continuing: Auser volunteers are collecting further funds to provide furniture and teaching materials".

The Carlo Giuliani Foundation has also been part of this project and has participated financially, due to the express wishes of his parents, as well as making a documentary about the school and the life of the Saharawi people.

Giuliano Giuliani comments: "There is a proverb of the Saharawi people I'd like to tell you about - they can kill the cock that crows at dawn, but there's no way they can stop dawn breaking".
